Well done to all who participated in the Darkness into Light Walk on Saturday morning in aid of Pieta House, the centre for prevention of suicide and self-harm.

On Sunday 24^th April, Coláiste Mhuire, Askeaton held its annual 5K event. The idea for a couch-to-5K originated in 2014 from discussions between PE teacher Íde Trant and Ken Boland, Managing Director of The School Food Company. The aim of the initiative was to raise awareness of the importance of physical activity in our daily lives. As a nation we talk the talk in terms of health and physical activity. The Coláiste Mhuire school community have continued to make health and fitness their priority ensuring that they walk the walk in terms of physical sporting health. In January, students, staff and family members began the couch to 5k training programme in preparation for this event with a weekly training session in school every Tuesday afternoon.

On Sunday afternoon, people arrived in their droves to participate in the 5k event. Nicola Dore, Irish Para-Powerlifter was in attendance to cut the ribbon and present awards to our athletes. The School Food Company kindly sponsored the event and provided participants with fruit and water after the race.

Principal Norma O’Brien would like to express sincerest thanks to everyone who came and participated in the event and to the many volunteers from the local community and from the school who gave up their time to help out with stewarding, refreshments and entertainment on the day.

Well done to the first year girls soccer team who played St. Camins Shannon in the Munster Final recently.

Congratulations to the Senior basketball team who have qualified for the county final in UL on Thursday April 10th. Well done and best wishes to all involved in the final.

Congratulations to the U14 Girls soccer team who have reached the Munster Minor Cup Final by defeating Presentation Thurles 2-1 in LIT. Well done to all involved.

Congratulations to the Cadet basketball team who have qualified for the County Final. They defeated Castletroy by one basket in a closely contested semi final. Best of luck to Ms. Kelliher, Coner Flynn and all involved in the final which will take place on Thursday March 10th in UL.

Congratulations to the TY students who successfully completed their Sky Sports project entitled ‘Fists of Fury’. As part of this project the group had to complete three tasks; 1. Learn a new sport, 2. Teach the sport to another group and 3. Organise a blitz for the chosen group. The students along with their mentor Jessie Barr and PE teacher Ms Trant researched and developed an understanding of the game of Ultimate Frisbee and subsequently taught a group of first year students how to play the game. They then organised a blitz for the for the first year group which took place on Tuesday February 23rd.  Well done to all involved.
